If you're still getting paid for what you do when sitting at home fair enough.

If you're poncing money off whatever muppet is sympathetic enough to employ you cos you don't wanna get your hair wet and your poor little head all hurty cos you had one sip too many of a fosters half shandy top at the poof convention last night then you might as well perform seppuku.

Not sure going to work on a rainy February day with a hangover when you can get paid to sit at home makes you tough. A little bit thick perhaps.

Your £70 grand income was based on the daily rate being paid 5 days a week plus weekend work for 52 weeks a year. That's not going to happen on average. Holidays and sick days will eat into that in a way that they wont for a PAYE employee. Also PAYE employees get pension paid on top of that.

If a self employed man working for £220 a day plus weekend work takes the same leave as the average PAYE worker they will work for 47 weeks per year. Take off some time for sick days and then subtract the pension provisions that PAYE worker would normally receive. You have about £50K over the year.

Wils,

To attempt to compare a 70 grand income to a 50 grand income with your rediculous comparisons adds up £20 grand difference which equates to £400 a week.

Wills,
It's a case of Hourses for courses I suppose. Our blokes earn just above probably the going rate, the vast majority are Irish/English which is irrelevant but as I said that's what I pay (£220 a shift)slightly above the going rate.
You asked a very general question and I've answered in honesty. If people work elsewhere in other lines of work and get paid more I couldn't give a shit.

40k a year?
Are you on minimum wage or something?

Re: You are lower down the food chain from me. I am a 40K a year a builder
Just to clarify, my point wasn't to stick up for him. Just that £40k/pa is certainly a lot of money in Oldham.

I'm sure if he was a recruitment consultant (or indeed a builder) from Brentwood boasting about an £80k/pa, a load of blokes somewhere would look down their nose too as thats relatively fuck all where they are.

Re: You are lower down the food chain from me. I am a 40K a year a builder

JKF:

"Our blokes (steel fixers and shuttering chippies)we try to keep hold of, most can read drawings and work 7.30 -5.00 in central London for £220 a day
Plus an easy Saturday morning 8am till 12.30 full shift paid.
So nearly £70 grand less 20% that's deducted before pay."

So with no pension provision, sick pay or holidays that will be comparable to £50K for an office worker on PAYE (£50k would attract 25% tax & NI). Not a significant difference to the northern builder claiming £40k and as he points out he lives in Oldham were housing is cheap.

I don't think anyone is arguing that you can have seriously rich builders - just that £40k a year does not make you rich...

Most on here I'd imagine are from London and the home counties. These lot are from Oldham. £40k/pa is definitely not fuck all up there considering you can buy a house for not much more.

Either way, what a pack of cunts.

I used to work in an office and spent ALL my time on here.

I'm now a sparks and have actually posted on here for once (Thursday is my office day and I'm actually up-to-date on invoicing and quoting for once!)

You are spot on. Working for a bank in London is a breeze compared to running a business involved in the building industry.

Wouldn't go back though.
